God of War PS2 Gets Unofficial PC Port: 60fps Target, Bring Your Own Disc
A fan-made project brings the original 2005 God of War to PC with mouse/keyboard support, graphics options, and a 60fps goal—but you'll need your own game disc to play.
Ever wanted to play the original God of War on your PC? Well, a fan-made project is making that happen. According to DSOGaming, an unofficial PC port of the 2005 PS2 classic is now available, complete with a handy launcher that walks you through setup in just a few steps. The launcher downloads the necessary tools and files, prepares your game disc, and builds the PC version for you.
But here's the catch: the project doesn't include any game files. You'll need to supply your own God of War disc. The launcher does support some fan-made translations, and if you insert multiple supported discs, you can pick which language to play in. The port is currently playable from start to finish, but it's still a work in progress.
For PC players, the biggest draws are the controls and visual options. You get full keyboard and mouse support with customizable bindings, plus the ability to switch between classic and modern gamepad layouts and remap buttons individually. On the visual side, you can adjust internal render resolution, enable sharp scaling, FXAA, and anisotropic filtering. There are also three graphics presets—Performance, Balanced, and Quality—along with borderless fullscreen, an FPS counter, V-Sync, and a frame rate cap. Most graphics options can be tweaked on the fly, and pressing F1 opens an in-game menu for quick access to graphics settings, cheats, and save tools, including copying memory card saves.
Performance is a major focus. The game targets 60fps, and the port uses techniques like building code while you play and profile-guided optimization (PGO). On your first playthrough, it records game code and performance data to use for the final build. Version 3.0.0 introduced Early FINISH, which prepares the next frame while the current one is being drawn—reportedly boosting speed by about 20% in intense combat. Adding PGO to the installation process showed an average gain of about 5%, and 13% in combat. The time for first-time setup and PGO steps also dropped from about 63 minutes to 24 minutes.
Version 3.0.1 continued optimizing VU1 code, raising the average frame rate from around 51fps to 57fps in tests, and in intense combat from about 51fps to 55fps. Thread wake-ups were reduced by about 150,000 per second, and combat saw another 3.5% boost. The installation process was simplified to avoid re-downloading the same files, support for PCs with four threads or fewer was improved, and users are warned if their CPU lacks SSE4.2. Older Intel integrated graphics can now use the GPU renderer instead of falling back to software mode.
The report also notes that the project doesn't yet hit a stable 60fps in every scene—some areas need more testing, and you might experience brief stutters or audio drops when moving between regions. Still, for a fan effort, it's impressive. Have you tried the port? Let us know in the comments!
