Zelda Movie Gets Official Title, No Subtitle—Here's Why
Nintendo reveals the live-action Zelda movie's simple title and explains the lack of a subtitle. The film hits theaters in 2027.
Remember when Nintendo teased us with a few images of the live-action Legend of Zelda movie earlier this year? Well, they've finally dropped a tiny nugget of info—and it's a doozy. We now have an official title, but don't expect any new footage or a trailer just yet. So, what are we calling this thing?
The answer is as straightforward as it gets: The Legend of Zelda. Yes, no subtitle, no fancy tagline. Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto popped in to share the news, and he made a point of highlighting the absence of a subtitle. According to him, once you actually see the movie, you'll totally get why they kept it so simple.
"Once you've seen the film, you'll understand why there isn't a subtitle," Miyamoto said. "This is an original film based on the many stories, ideas, and concepts of the series, built up through the years for 40 years. Through the creative power and visual expertise of the talented production team, it's become an artistic work worthy of the Legend of Zelda series."
The movie stars Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, and it's directed by Wes Ball, the guy behind Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. This marks the first live-action Nintendo adaptation since the infamous Super Mario Bros. movie back in 1993—so no pressure, right? Ball has previously teased that he's aiming for a Studio Ghibli vibe meets gritty realism, which sounds like a wild but intriguing mix.
Filming kicked off in November 2025 in New Zealand—the same country where Peter Jackson brought Lord of the Rings to life—and wrapped in April 2026. The movie is slated to hit theaters on April 30, 2027. Wait, did I say 2027? Yeah, we've got a bit of a wait ahead of us.
