Space Marine 2 Dev: Why We're So Profitable (Hint: Not the US)

Saber Interactive's CEO says making games outside the US keeps costs down and profits up, and the company has no real development in North America anymore.
Ever wonder why some studios seem to rake in cash while others burn through it? Saber Interactive's CEO has a pretty blunt answer: make your games somewhere cheaper.
In a recent interview, the boss behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 explained that part of the reason his company's titles are so profitable is that they're developed outside the United States. He didn't dance around it either, saying the company has "no real development in North America any more."
That's a striking statement from a studio that's behind a major licensed hit. But it lines up with a broader trend in the industry, where development costs in the US have ballooned to the point that many publishers are looking elsewhere for talent and savings.
The CEO also took a swipe at some of the competition, without naming names. "Sometimes I play these games – I won't mention the game – and I can just see the wasted money," he said. Ouch. You can almost picture him shaking his head at bloated budgets and questionable spending decisions.
It's a candid take that might ruffle some feathers, especially among developers working in North America. But it also highlights a harsh reality: game development is a business, and where you build your game can have a massive impact on the bottom line.
For players, the takeaway isn't necessarily about where a game is made, but what ends up on screen. Space Marine 2 has been a commercial and critical success, so whatever Saber is doing seems to be working. Still, the comment raises questions about the future of game development hubs and whether more studios will follow suit.
Whether you agree with the strategy or not, it's hard to argue with results. Saber's approach is clearly paying off, and the company isn't shy about saying why.
What do you think? Does it matter where a game is developed if it's good? And would you like to see more studios open up about the business side of things? Let us know in the comments.
