Romancing SaGa 3 Remake: Destinies United Hits 2027

Square Enix announced a full 3D remake of Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United during September's Nintendo Direct. It launches February 16, 2027, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch.

Did you catch that surprise during September's Nintendo Direct? Square Enix dropped a bombshell: Romancing SaGa 3 is getting a full 3D remake, titled Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United. If you're a fan of classic RPGs, this is one you'll want to keep on your radar.

The original Romancing SaGa 3 launched back in 1995, and this remake aims to bring it into the modern era with upgraded graphics, fully voiced cutscenes, and overhauls to combat and other mechanics. You'll also get selectable difficulty levels, so whether you're a veteran or a newcomer, you can tailor the challenge. Square Enix is calling it a "full 3D remake," so expect a fresh look while staying true to the game's roots.

Set in a world with scheduled despair, the story follows eight protagonists on their quest to find the survivor of a calamity. Each has their own reason for embarking on this journey, but the driving force is the Rise of Morastrum, an event that occurs every 300 years and destroys all newborn life except for one survivor: the Child of Destiny. It's a dark premise, but that's part of what makes the SaGa series so compelling.

Like the original, you'll meet and recruit over 20 other characters along the way, each with individual stats and abilities. You can further fine-tune them with a Nonastrum, a star of fate that you assign, influencing their affinity for techs and spells. The Freeform Scenario System returns, letting your choices shape the characters you meet. In battle, your warriors can "glimmer" new techniques, gain evasion skills, and perform powerful United Attacks. Plus, War Mode and the Business minigame are back, so you can command armies or grow a trading empire when you need a break from the main storyline.

Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United will launch for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch on February 16, 2027. That's still a while away, but it's never too early to start planning your party. The SaGa series has been a hit for Square since the first entry kicked off in 1989 on the Game Boy. It's known for pioneering open-world exploration and non-linear storytelling, and in 2024, Square Enix released Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, so the franchise is clearly still going strong.

With eight protagonists, over 20 recruitable characters, and a wealth of new features, this remake could be a massive time sink. Whether you're a longtime SaGa fan or curious about the series, Destinies United looks like it'll offer plenty to sink your teeth into.
