Compulsion Games Goes Independent: What's Next for South of Midnight?

Compulsion Games is now officially independent from Xbox, reclaiming its IP and staff. Here's what this means for the studio and its games.
Remember when South of Midnight blew you away earlier this year? Well, the studio behind that hit just made a huge power move. Compulsion Games is officially no longer an Xbox studio, and it's a big deal for the team and for you as a player.
So, what happened? After Microsoft confirmed it was cutting ties with five studios, Compulsion boss Guillaume Provost has now confirmed the split is complete. The management team bought the studio, and Microsoft handed back the IP. That means if you buy South of Midnight on Steam, your cash goes straight to Compulsion, not Xbox. Pretty cool, right?
Provost told GamesBeat that the team really wanted to stay together. He even asked them directly, and their response was epic: "We would rather eat rocks and drink gasoline rather than be split up." That's dedication. While some devs did leave after warnings about possible closure, most of the senior staff stuck around.
Now, Compulsion is already working on a new, unannounced game that was in progress before the split. But here's the catch: Microsoft was their money guy, so Provost is out there meeting with potential backers to secure the studio's future. He's playing it cool, saying, "We're going to take things slow... Compared to all of us losing our jobs on July 6, this is a pretty good deal."
The other studios affected? Double Fine, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, and Arkane. Double Fine also went independent, and Tim Schafer will spill the beans on their future in a livestream today. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs got sold to mystery buyers, and Arkane is sorting things out with French labor laws. It's all part of a big "reset" under new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, which has already seen thousands of layoffs.
For you, this means supporting Compulsion now goes directly to the devs. It's a win for indie spirit. But will they thrive without the big corporate safety net? Only time will tell.
What do you think about Compulsion going solo? Are you excited to see what they cook up next?
