Double Fine Goes Independent: Keeper Hits PS5 with Price Cuts

Remember when Double Fine was under Microsoft's wing? Well, those days are over, and the studio is already making waves as an independent developer. Fresh off its liberation, Double Fine just shadow-dropped its surreal adventure Keeper on PS5 during the September 2026 State of Play. But that's not all – they've also added a 'Psychedelic Mode' to the game. If you thought Keeper was already a visual trip, this new mode promises an even wilder way to experience it.

And wait, there's more! Double Fine is also slashing prices across its catalog. Keeper, which launched in 2025 at $30, is now just $20. Its other recent gem, Kiln, which came out earlier in 2026, is seeing even steeper cuts. The base game drops from $20 to $8, and the deluxe 'Fired Up' edition goes from $30 to $10. That's a steal for quality indie titles.

But why the price cuts? It's all part of Double Fine's new independent spirit. Since splitting from Microsoft in July, the studio is directly supported by game purchases. Unfortunately, the split wasn't entirely smooth – they had to cut 25% of their staff. Still, they're pressing forward with fan-friendly moves.

Keeper has been a critical darling, with GameSpot calling it a 'visual feast.' Now that it's on PS5, more players can enjoy its bizarre beauty. And with the Psychedelic Mode, even returning players will have a reason to dive back in.

But Double Fine isn't stopping there. They've also revived their beloved Amnesia Fortnight game jam, which was paused during the Xbox era. The crowdfunding campaign for it has already blown past its $400,000 goal. The jam will produce the studio's next title, but the real head-turner is a stretch goal: if they hit $100 million, they'll make Brutal Legend 2. That's a lofty dream, but hey, a gamer can dream, right? Unless some Jack Black-loving billionaire steps up, we might not see that sequel.
