Switch 2 Jailbroken Already? New Exploit Cracks Nintendo's Latest Console

A new software-only exploit called ns2jb claims to jailbreak the Nintendo Switch 2 on firmware 23.0.1, letting users run homebrew and mod games like Mario Kart World.

Well, that didn't take long. Just days after the PS5's 14.20 firmware got cracked wide open, Nintendo's shiny new Switch 2 has reportedly fallen to hackers too. A jailbreak method dubbed 'ns2jb' has been published, and it's aimed squarely at the console's latest 23.0.1 firmware.

The best part? It's a pure software exploit—no soldering, no mod chips required. According to the developers, they leveraged an integer overflow bug in SmileBASIC 4 as the entry point, gradually escalating privileges within the file system module until they achieved arbitrary native code execution. That's some serious reverse-engineering chops.

Once the exploit is triggered, the possibilities open up considerably. Players can run homebrew applications, modify games, back up save files, and even directly access most of the console's peripheral hardware. To prove it works, the team even demoed a mod for Mario Kart World using the jailbreak.

However, there's a catch—because it's a tethered jailbreak, you'll need to reconnect the console and re-run the exploit every time you reboot. The project's code has already been uploaded to GitLab, so the cat's officially out of the bag.

This development is a bit of a black eye for Nintendo, which has historically been aggressive about locking down its hardware. The Switch 2 was supposed to be a fresh start on the security front, but if this exploit holds up, it could be a sign of things to come. Of course, it's worth noting that jailbreaking your console likely violates Nintendo's terms of service and could lead to a ban—so proceed with caution if you're thinking of trying it yourself.

For now, the homebrew community is undoubtedly buzzing. Whether Nintendo will respond with a firmware patch or legal action remains to be seen. Either way, the race between hackers and console makers is as heated as ever.

What do you think—will Nintendo manage to plug this hole quickly, or is the Switch 2 in for a wild ride? Let us know in the comments below!
