RTX 5080 Dies After Unofficial DLSS 5 Mod: A $4,000 Lesson

A Reddit user's month-old RTX 5080 failed after injecting an unofficial DLSS 5 mod into GTA 5, sparking debate over whether the GPU or the mod is to blame.
Imagine dropping $4,000 on a brand-new gaming rig, only to watch it die a month later because of a mod. That's exactly what happened to one Reddit user, and their cautionary tale is making the rounds.
According to a post shared online, the user forced NVIDIA's latest DLSS 5 neural rendering feature into GTA 5 using a third-party tool. The very next day, while playing, the screen erupted in severe visual artifacts, the whole system froze, and it refused to boot ever again.
The machine was no budget build, either. It packed an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D processor paired with an RTX 5080 16GB graphics card. The user says that after just five minutes of running at ultra settings and around 80 FPS, the display started flickering violently and locking up.
Troubleshooting pointed straight at the GPU. When the RTX 5080 was removed and the system ran on the Ryzen chip's integrated graphics, everything worked fine. But plugging the card back in killed the peripheral lighting and even blocked access to the motherboard BIOS.
After weeks of warranty back-and-forth, the user finally received a replacement RTX 5080, and the PC returned to full health. A happy ending, but an expensive and stressful one.
Here's the interesting part: the user isn't pointing the finger squarely at DLSS 5. They openly admit there's no proof the feature actually fried the card. Instead, they suspect the RTX 5080 may have had a hidden hardware defect that only surfaced under the heavy load of DLSS 5.
And they're not about to test that theory. With the new card working perfectly, they've decided against repeating the experiment. Going forward, they'll wait for DLSS 5 to officially arrive in games they care about rather than messing with third-party injection methods.
It's a solid reminder that unofficial mods can push hardware into territory it was never meant to handle. Have you ever bricked a component chasing extra performance? Drop your horror stories in the comments.
