Nicolas Cage Relieved Spider-Man Noir Show Didn't Get Season 2

Nicolas Cage says he's relieved his acclaimed Spider-Man Noir series wasn't renewed, explaining one season told the whole story and a sequel risked wearing out the character.

Sometimes the best ending is the one you don't get to write yourself. Nicolas Cage has revealed that when he heard his Spider-Man Noir series wasn't getting a second season, his reaction was simple: "Phew, thanks."

According to PlayGround.ru, the actor admitted he felt genuinely relieved that the show, which earned high praise from both fans and critics, wouldn't be coming back. For Cage, one season was always the plan — or at least, the right call in hindsight.

He first addressed the cancellation back in September in a statement to Deadline, saying a single season was enough to tell the story he wanted to tell through this unique and innovative take on Spider-Man. Then in early November, IGN asked him again whether there was anything left he wanted to show in the character's story, and he stuck to the same answer.

Cage explained that Ben Reilly is a very distinctive hero, and playing him is like walking a tightrope — it comes with built-in risk. If the show had pushed on into a second or third season, it would have been easy to burn through viewers' interest and to trap himself in repeating the same role over and over. In his view, some stories are simply better off wrapped up as standalone works.

The actor also made clear he's pretty happy with season one and with the character itself, and he believes the season will hold up over time without losing its freshness. Beyond the creative reasoning, he'd previously said he refused to sign an authorization allowing AI to be used in the show's production, and he's been critical of Amazon's stance on AI, saying it's unlikely he'd work with the company again.

So there you have it — not every superhero story needs a trilogy. Sometimes a tight, self-contained run is exactly what a character deserves. What do you think: should more shows call it quits after one great season, or do you always want to see where a second one could go?
