Monster Hunter World on Switch 2? Capcom Says It'd Need a Full Remake

Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto says porting Monster Hunter: World to Switch 2 is basically impossible because of its outdated engine — it would need a full remake from scratch.

If you've been holding out hope for Monster Hunter: World on Switch 2, we've got some bad news. According to series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, that port is basically never happening — and it's not because the console can't handle it.

Tsujimoto addressed the topic during an interview with TheGamer at Tokyo Game Show, responding to fans who keep asking for a Switch 2 version of the 2018 hit. His answer was pretty blunt: it's "basically impossible." The blocker isn't hardware power. It's the engine.

"World uses a completely different engine from our later games," he explained. "Since Rise, we've been using RE Engine the whole time. Once the engine changes, the whole nature of the problem changes. We'd have to completely remake the game from scratch."

Here's the technical side of things. Monster Hunter: World was built on Capcom's previous-generation MT Framework engine. Meanwhile, every Capcom title already out or confirmed for Switch 2 — Street Fighter 6, Pragmata, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and the Resident Evil series — runs on RE Engine. MT Framework has long since been retired internally at Capcom, which means unless World gets rebuilt entirely in RE Engine, the odds of it hitting new platforms are extremely slim.

So yeah, don't expect a simple port. A full remake would be the only realistic path, and that's a much bigger undertaking than just flipping a switch.

That said, Switch 2 owners aren't exactly starving for Monster Hunter content. Monster Hunter Wilds is already locked in for the platform on December 4, 2026, complete with cross-platform play. And its massive expansion, Ascendance, has also been confirmed for Switch 2.
