KRAFTON Cancels PUBG: Black Budget After Two Closed Tests

KRAFTON has officially pulled the plug on PUBG: Black Budget, its PvPvE extraction shooter set on a time-looped island. The game never made it past two closed alpha tests.
Well, this one stings a bit. KRAFTON has officially cancelled PUBG: Black Budget, the extraction shooter spin-off that looked like it was cooking up something special. On October 1, the company confirmed the project is dead in the water after two rounds of closed alpha testing.
For those who missed it, Black Budget was being built by PUBG Corporation, the same team behind PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS. The pitch? You play as a retired veteran hired for a classified operation on a remote island. Sounds normal enough, right? Except the island is stuck in a time loop and slowly being consumed by a supernatural phenomenon known as the "Anomaly." Your job was to recover relics, dig into what's going on, and expose a secret program.
The gameplay setup was pretty ambitious too. The map measured 2.5 x 2.5 kilometers, and you could squad up in teams of up to three, with as many as 45 players total in a PvPvE match. You'd take contracts and missions from three different factions, with each round lasting up to 30 minutes. As the Anomaly spread, the playable area would shrink, forcing you to balance exploration, combat, and extraction if you wanted to come out on top.
In its statement, KRAFTON explained that after reassessing the project's progress and future direction, it concluded the current path wouldn't deliver a long-term playable experience. So rather than push forward, the team decided to shut it down. The silver lining? Everything learned during development and testing will be carried over to future projects.
It's always rough when a game with a cool concept doesn't make it to launch, especially one that actually got hands-on time with players. Two closed alphas means there was something real here, and the team clearly put work into making the Anomaly-driven extraction loop feel distinct. But if the studio didn't see a sustainable future for it, pulling the plug early is probably better than dragging it out.
No word yet on what those "future projects" might look like, but KRAFTON seems committed to applying the lessons learned. As for Black Budget, it'll remain a what-if for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S players who were hoping to dive into that time-looped nightmare.
What do you think, did KRAFTON make the right call here, or were you hoping they'd stick with it a bit longer? Drop your thoughts below.
