Hellblade Dev Ninja Theory Could Be Shut Down by Microsoft

Microsoft has reportedly started consultation talks over closing Ninja Theory after two acquisition attempts fell through, as part of a wider Xbox restructure.

Well, this one hurts. Ninja Theory, the studio behind the Hellblade series, might be on the chopping block — and Microsoft has reportedly already kicked off the process that could shut it down.

According to Insider-Gaming, the news lands alongside a fresh wave of Xbox layoffs and a big internal reshuffle. Microsoft has now started a staff consultation process to discuss closing the studio, though it's apparently still keeping the door open for other options.

Even back then, rumors were swirling that the studio's future was shaky — and reports suggested the reveal itself was partly meant to attract potential buyers. The restructuring isn't just about Ninja Theory, either. In the same shake-up, Activision is set to take over Rare and World's Edge, with the next Halo being handed to a new Activision team. Obsidian is moving under Bethesda, where it'll keep pushing Grounded and a brand-new Fallout project. Playground and Turn 10 are officially merging, focusing on Forza and Fable. And over at Arkane, further consultation talks are set to run until late 2026.

It's a lot of moving pieces all at once, and it paints a picture of an Xbox that's aggressively reshaping its studio lineup. For fans of Hellblade's moody, psychological storytelling, the idea of Ninja Theory going quiet is a tough pill to swallow.
