Xbox CEO Responds to Ironic Price Hikes Linked to Microsoft's AI Push

Ever wonder why your next Xbox might cost as much as a used car? Well, you can thank the AI boom—and Microsoft's massive bet on it—for at least part of that price hike. In a recent interview, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reacted to the irony that Microsoft's own AI push has contributed to making consoles pricier than ever.

"Gaming has always been a proving ground for the GPU," Sharma told the BBC. "I think it is wonderful that there are more uses for this technology around the world. AI is fundamentally changing a lot of things. So our job as Xbox, as we continue on our next generation, is to take into consideration what's happening in the world and build the best experience for our players."

Let's face it: the price of entry into Xbox gaming has skyrocketed. The cheapest new console, the Xbox Series S, now retails for $500—a whopping $200 more than its launch price back in 2020. And it's not just Xbox; the entire industry is feeling the pinch. But Sharma's comments suggest that Microsoft is aware of the strain and is planning for a future where affordability takes center stage.

Speaking about the next generation, including the rumored Helix platform, Sharma hinted that we might see a family of devices rather than a single console. "We've been hard at work on a great next generation, a great family of devices for Helix, and we'll share more soon," she said. "We will of course continue to push the boundaries of performance. We've talked about being able to not only play your console games but also play your PC games on your console. I think in addition, all of the industry needs to innovate on affordability and efficiency. That is something that we have not had to [before]."

So, what does this mean for your wallet? Sharma acknowledged that the current "crisis" in hardware and components is forcing Microsoft to rethink how players access their games. "Our job as Xbox... is to give players more choice in how they play their console and how they purchase their console," she added. That could mean more flexible payment options or even more affordable hardware tiers down the line.

In the meantime, Microsoft has been directing budget-conscious gamers to consider Buy Now, Pay Later services or 0% APR financing, and even certified refurbished consoles. But here's the kicker: the most expensive Xbox ever, the 25th-anniversary translucent green console, just dropped at $900 and sold out instantly. So, despite the price hikes, demand for premium hardware seems strong—US Xbox sales even doubled recently.

It's a mixed bag, really. On one hand, you've got record-high prices and a company that's partly responsible for the GPU shortage thanks to its AI investments. On the other, there are signs that players are still willing to pay up. But with Sony also raising PS5 prices and Nintendo hiking Switch 2 costs, it's clear the whole industry is navigating choppy waters.
