God of War: Sons of Sparta PS4 Version Reportedly in the Works

A PlayStation data miner claims the 2D God of War spin-off is getting a PS4 release, though Sony hasn't officially confirmed it yet.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise for anyone still rocking a trusty old PS4. God of War: Sons of Sparta, the series' first 2D entry on consoles, looks like it's heading to last-gen hardware too.

The rumor comes courtesy of PlayStation Game Size, a social media account known for digging through PlayStation's backend data. According to their latest post, a PS4 version of Sons of Sparta is confirmed to be in the pipeline. If you've been following this account before, you know they've got a decent track record when it comes to spotting unannounced ports early.

Just to be clear, though, this is only about the PS4 version being prepared. Sony itself hasn't said a word publicly about a release date or any other details for that version. So take this one as a strong hint rather than an official announcement—we'll have to wait for Sony to make it official.

For those who missed it, Sons of Sparta was revealed during February's State of Play showcase. It's a big deal for the franchise since it marks the first time the God of War series has gone 2D on a home console. The game is currently exclusive to PS5, so a PS4 version would open it up to a whole lot more players who haven't made the leap to Sony's current-gen machine yet.

It's also a nice little vote of confidence for the PS4, which is now over a decade old. Plenty of people out there are still happily gaming on theirs, and seeing a new God of War title come to the platform is the kind of news that keeps that aging console feeling relevant.

That said, don't expect a date just yet. PlayStation Game Size's report only confirms that the port is being worked on—everything else, from launch timing to pricing, remains under wraps until Sony decides to spill the beans. We'll keep an eye on this one and update you as soon as something official drops.

Are you still gaming on a PS4, or have you fully moved on to PS5? Would a portable-friendly 2D God of War convince you to dust off the old console? Let us know in the comments!
