God of War: Laufey Combat Breakdown: Snake Bow, Excalibur and More
A new report rounds up everything we know about Laufey's arsenal in God of War: Laufey, from the versatile Snake Scale Bow to a mysterious sword that might be Excalibur.
God of War: Laufey is coming, and while everyone's busy debating whether Kratos' second wife can carry a whole game on her shoulders, The Gamer reckons the real star of the show is the combat. The outlet put together a handy rundown of everything we know so far about Laufey's weapons, and honestly, it sounds like Santa Monica Studio is cooking.
First up, the Snake Scale Bow. Santa Monica has confirmed that alongside her seemingly standard sword, Laufey will wield a seriously powerful bow. That melee-ranged balance could push the gameplay to heights the series has never reached before, giving Laufey her own combat identity and helping her step out of Kratos' very large shadow.
So how does the bow actually work? You've got two firing modes. Pull the aim trigger all the way down for Precision Mode, which boosts your accuracy and extends your range. You can also charge the bow and then unleash five arrows at once. Half-press the trigger instead and you get Hipfire Mode, a faster close-range shot that lets you snap between sword swings and arrow shots, and it's a big part of the aerial combo system shown off previously.
The bow also comes with Snake Scales, which double as cosmetic customization and special buffs, so you can tailor the weapon to your own playstyle. Sure, Atreus' bow added depth to the Norse saga before, but Laufey's setup sounds like a whole different beast entirely.
Then there's the mysterious sword, and this is where things get spicy. In the first preview footage, when Laufey draws her blade, the Mongolian deity Begtse visibly grows more cautious around her. That raises an obvious question: what kind of weapon is powerful enough to make a god nervous?
Plenty of theories are floating around. One popular guess is that it's Excalibur, King Arthur's legendary sword. Others reckon it could be Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, the famous blade from Japanese legend. And some think it might be Asi, the sword from Indian mythology whose name literally means "sword." Whatever it turns out to be, we're intrigued.
God of War: Laufey launches February 16, 2027, as a PS5 exclusive. Which weapon are you most hyped to try, and what's your bet on the sword's true identity? Drop your theories below!
