FF7 Revelation Director Promises Sephiroth Finale Will Blow Remake and Rebirth Away

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's director says the final Sephiroth fight is "extremely flashy" and far bigger than what came before, plus big expansions for Yuffie, Vincent, and Zack.
If you thought the Sephiroth showdowns in Remake and Rebirth were wild, just wait. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi is promising a final battle that goes way beyond anything the trilogy has thrown at us so far.
Speaking with PC Gamer, Hamaguchi talked about whether this decade-spanning remake project could become an industry template. He said the trilogy has given Square Enix a valuable "case study," but whether anyone can actually replicate it is a whole different question. For him, the secret sauce is simple: the core team has been together for over ten years. "Maintaining a stable development environment for more than a decade is extremely difficult," he noted. Hamaguchi has been series director since the first game, and he admitted that "if someone else had taken over, they might have wanted to move on to something else after the first game" โ a leadership shake-up would have changed the project's direction and style entirely.
Now, about that final Sephiroth fight. Hamaguchi didn't want to spoil anything, but he made one thing crystal clear: "There will definitely be a dramatic showdown, otherwise fans would be furious." He described the battle as "extremely flashy and all-out," with a scale and presentation that far exceeds both Remake and Rebirth. He also hinted at a nod to the original's iconic finishing move, Super Nova... well, the classic limit break fans know and love. "We crammed in everything we could cram in," he teased.
Weapons are getting a shake-up too. In Revelation, Weapon bosses are split into main story and side content. The mainline ones are tuned to be easier so most players can clear them, while the side bosses are "very difficult" and expect you to be above the level you'd normally finish the game at.
Pacing-wise, Hamaguchi said Revelation follows the same design philosophy as Rebirth: "If you just do the main story, the pacing is as tight as Remake." As for why anyone would bother with side quests while a meteor is bearing down on the planet, he explained that it's exactly how the characters "find their own reasons to keep moving forward" โ and Nomura's script accounts for that.
On top of all that, Yuffie and Vincent are getting massively expanded roles. Both were optional characters in the original, but this time they're deeply woven into the main story. Zack also gets more playable chapters than in Rebirth, complete with his own combat system and skill tree.
Revelation is headed to PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. So, which part are you most hyped for โ the Sephiroth finale, the Weapon fights, or finally getting proper Yuffie and Vincent time? Let us know!
