FF7 Rebirth Director Regrets Brutal Platinum, Promises Easier Trophy in Revelation

Naoki Hamaguchi says the team underestimated how many players wanted the Platinum trophy in FF7 Rebirth. For the final part, Revelation, he expects 20% or more to earn it.
Ever spent hours grinding for a Platinum trophy only to feel like you've been punched in the gut? You're not alone. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's Platinum trophy, 'The Planet's Hope,' has been a sore spot for many players. In fact, only 2.3% of Steam players have managed to snag it. And now, the game's director, Naoki Hamaguchi, admits he has some regrets.
In an interview with Anime News Network, Hamaguchi opened up about the team's approach to Rebirth's completionist trophy. "For Rebirth's Platinum trophy โ well, for Rebirth in general โ there's so much to do," he said. "There's so much content. We wanted to make people go through all this content and perfect it. It's kind of by design that that would make it difficult." But it turns out, that design might have been a bit too harsh.
Battle director Teruki Endo was particularly affected by fan feedback. According to Hamaguchi, Endo said, "'Oh, no! I feel bad โ I have regrets.'" Hamaguchi continued, "I don't want to call it a mistake in judgment or anything but we also didn't expect so many people to want the Platinum trophy. I think that was what we underestimated here." So, lesson learned, right?
For the final installment of the remake trilogy, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Square Enix is changing its tune. Hamaguchi expects that "twenty percent of players or maybe even more than that to be able to obtain" the Platinum trophy in Revelation. That's a huge jump from Rebirth's 2.3% on Steam. And it's not just about the trophy โ the combat is getting a makeover too.
"It's not just about the amount of battles that there are but the battles themselves that are going to be enjoyable," Hamaguchi explained. "I think that's one thing that we've learned from Rebirth: to make the battles themselves enjoyable rather than just challenging." So, expect fewer rage-quit moments and more fist-pumping victories. Revelation is set to launch on April 8, 2027, so mark your calendars.
But wait, there's more. Hamaguchi also touched on the risk of splitting Final Fantasy 7 Remake into three parts. He admitted that if the first game had been received "poorly," Square Enix would have been in a tough spot. Thankfully, that wasn't the case, and we're now gearing up for the epic conclusion.
So, what do you think? Are you glad the Platinum trophy will be easier to get in Revelation, or do you prefer the challenge? Will you be picking it up when it launches in 2027? Let us know in the comments!
