Zeverland: Cute Zombies, Wild Weapons, and Co-op Chaos

Zeverland puts a cute spin on the zombie apocalypse with duct-taped weapons and vehicle customization. After shifting to PvE co-op, it's heading to Steam Early Access as early as Q1 next year.
What if the zombie apocalypse was... adorable? That's the vibe Zeverland is going for, and honestly, we're here for it. This survival crafting game lets you duct tape a clothes iron to a tennis racket or weld a camera to a baseball bat to electrify your attacks. Yes, you read that right. You can modify just about everything you find, turning everyday junk into deadly tools.
But it's not just about weapons. You also get a vehicle that you can customize however you want. Weld stuff to it, turn it into a mobile base. Attach a bed so you have somewhere to rest, or put ramming spikes on the front to mow down hordes of zombies. The freedom is wild.
After its most recent playtest in June, Zeverland underwent some big design changes based on player feedback. Originally announced as an open-world MMO where you could sabotage other players, it's now shifted to focus on PvE co-op where you build, explore, and survive together with friends. Solo play is still possible, but the emphasis is on teamwork.
At gamescom, we got to chat with lead game designer Cecilia Pan about the game's focus on players helping each other, the creativity of players, and the different gameplay systems. Pan explained that the game takes place a few months after a zombie apocalypse. Cities are still there, and you can enter all kinds of buildings like police stations, hospitals, and convenience stores. You can interact with objects naturally—pick them up, put them in your backpack, or combine them into weapons.
So why co-op? Pan said, "When a natural disaster strikes, humanity ultimately always chooses to stand together and fight against it." The team played a lot of survival games themselves and wanted to make one where people use their own knowledge and creativity to solve survival problems, eventually working together to take the world back from the zombies. In most co-op games, you're following fixed storylines or fighting specific bosses. But Zeverland wants a sandbox-style cooperation where there are endless ways to play. You can choose to help others or not. For example, if you're driving and come across another survivor, you can stop and give them a can of gas. Or you can just keep going. It's all about player choice.
And cooperation doesn't stop at basic survival. Pan wants to see players work together to do something bigger. Maybe build a bridge across a river, set up ziplines between tall buildings, or restore power to a big city. Those kinds of experiences require more players to pull off.
Zeverland has already held two playtests, and it's planning to launch into Steam Early Access as early as Q1 next year. With its cute-but-deadly aesthetic and emphasis on player-driven cooperation, it's definitely one to watch. What do you think? Will you be teaming up with friends to take back the world?
