WoW: Forever Beta Breaks Records, Blizzard Boosts Cap

Blizzard's WoW: Forever beta is so popular that the population cap has been raised multiple times, with developers calling it record-breaking.
Ever seen a beta so packed that the developers have to keep raising the population cap? That's exactly what's happening with World of Warcraft: Forever, Blizzard's upcoming classic-style server. The beta is in full swing, and it's already breaking records.
Forever was revealed as Blizzard's big finale during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony. It's a modified version of WoW Classic that keeps the old-school gameplay and world but adds plenty of new changes and content. It's something WoW Classic players have been asking for years, and Blizzard is finally delivering.
The beta kicked off on September 17 with an initial level cap of 20 and runs through October 21. The full launch is set for November 4. But this isn't an open beta—you need to buy the $60 Skyborne Epic Pack, which also unlocks the new playable Skyborne race, to get in.
Despite that $60 barrier, the beta has been massive. From the start, it ran into problems due to sheer popularity. Senior game producer Tom Ellis (who has since deleted his X account) posted a technical breakdown, blaming many of the initial issues on the beta environment simply not being used to such high demand. Other Blizzard devs quickly chimed in. Executive producer Holly Longdale said the beta was "setting records." Two days later, on September 19, she added, "launch will be wild…and we are here for it, come what may."
On September 27, Longdale announced that Blizzard had to increase the beta's population cap once again. "The wild ride continues," she said. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield, who often interacts with the community on X, called the beta "crazy." He said, "The craziest numbers I've seen in 17 years working at Blizzard and almost 8 years on Classic. We've got something really special here."
When asked about potential login queues at launch, Greenfield explained that the beta itself is the answer—the team found and fixed more problems on beta launch day than they would have in six months of internal testing. Still, given past WoW launches, technical issues wouldn't be shocking, even though Forever is doing away with traditional servers.
Blizzard hasn't released exact beta numbers, but based on everything we've seen, Forever's launch is shaping up to be a doozy. What do you think about the beta's popularity? Will you be picking up the Skyborne Epic Pack to join in?
