Witcher 3 Remastered on Switch 2 Gives Free Digital Copy to Physical Owners

CDPR confirms that owners of the original Switch physical card can update and claim a free Switch 2 digital version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered.
CD Projekt Red just dropped some genuinely great news for Witcher fans who bought the game on Switch the old-school way. If you own the original physical cartridge of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on Switch, you can now grab a free digital copy of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered on Switch 2. No extra payment. No hoops to jump through.
Here's how it works: just update your game and boot it up, and the Switch 2 digital version is yours. Once you've claimed it, you won't need to keep inserting that original Switch cartridge to play the Switch 2 version. The digital copy stands on its own, so you can leave the physical card in its case and never worry about swapping it in just to verify you own the game.
That last part is the real kicker. Cross-generation upgrades often come with annoying caveats, like needing the old disc or cart inserted every time you want to play. CDPR is skipping that entirely. Your physical purchase effectively becomes a permanent digital license on the new hardware, which is about as player-friendly as it gets.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is the latest version of the game, built by CDPR and rooted in Slavic mythology, following the story of Geralt the witcher. It officially launches on September 29, 2026. The game is headed to PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.
The remastered version has now officially unlocked, and alongside its release, the long-awaited upgrade path for owners of the older Switch physical release has been confirmed. It didn't take long for players to discover the free digital copy perk after the game went live, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
It's a smart move from CDPR. By lowering the barrier for existing fans to jump to the new generation, the studio makes it easy to stick with the game you already love rather than punishing you for buying physical in the first place. Loyalty like that tends to earn goodwill, and this approach is likely to win CDPR plenty of it.
So if you've got that original Switch cartridge sitting on your shelf, go update your game and claim what's yours. Are you planning to jump into the Switch 2 version? Let us know in the comments!
