Warhorse Co-Founder Hopes GTA 6 Raises Game Prices

Martin Klima isn't a GTA fan, but he hopes GTA 6's $80 price tag will pave the way for higher game prices industry-wide.
Ever feel like games are getting more expensive? Well, one industry veteran is hoping they get even pricier—and he's pointing to GTA 6 as the trailblazer.
Warhorse Studios co-founder Martin Klima recently told PC Gamer that he has zero interest in playing Grand Theft Auto 6 when it launches on consoles November 19. In fact, he doesn't even understand why the series is so popular. "It beats me," he said. But despite his personal disinterest, Klima is rooting for GTA 6 to be a massive hit—because he hopes it will finally give other studios the courage to raise their game prices.
Why? Because making games is ridiculously expensive, and those costs keep climbing as hardware gets more powerful and players expect bigger, more complex worlds. But the revenue streams to support that aren't growing. Audience growth has plateaued, and digital storefronts are already squeezing out maximum returns. As Klima bluntly put it, "We destroyed retail, and we took all their money."
The pandemic created an "artificial demand" that temporarily boosted things, but that's faded. Now, many studios are struggling after executives overextended during the boom. Klima sees one remaining lever: raising the unit price. "That would help a lot, but everybody's scared to death about it," he said. "Now, hopefully, GTA will blaze the trail, and it will allow us to increase the cost."
He believes Rockstar and Take-Two are the only ones who can afford to take that risk. "I wish them all the luck," he added. And it seems that wish is coming true: Take-Two confirmed in June that GTA 6 will launch at $80, $10 more than the standard big-budget price. With a hefty chunk of content locked behind the pricier Ultimate Edition, it's effectively a $100 game.
This isn't just Klima's dream. Back in May, Bank of America analyst Omar Dessouky argued that a higher price for GTA 6 would "raise the price point for the entire industry." Now that it's happening, we may see more expensive games across the board in 2027 and beyond.
So, whether you're a GTA fan or not, the ripples from its pricing could hit every game you buy. What do you think—are you willing to pay more for games, or is $80 already too steep?
