Warcraft 3's New Campaign Sparks Call for More RTS DLC

Warcraft 3's first new campaign in 23 years has reignited hopes for belated expansions in classic RTS games, following successes like Age of Empires 2 and Dawn of War.
Did you ever think you'd see a new Warcraft 3 campaign in 2026? Well, it's happening. At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard announced the Warcraft 3 Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom expansion, marking the first new campaign for the game in 23 years. And honestly, it's about time we normalize releasing new DLC for ancient RTS games.
This trend of updating older games isn't new. The Witcher 3 recently got a new expansion called Songs of the Past, and Quake received a new episode. Nightdive's upcoming Thief remaster will include a new campaign. But for real-time strategy games, this feels like a bigger deal. The genre has been stagnant for years, with disappointing releases like Company of Heroes 3, Stormgate, and Homeworld 3 in 2024. So when a classic RTS gets new content, it's a genuine treat.
There's proof that this approach works. Microsoft has been supporting Age of Empires 2 for years, and it's still more popular than the newer Age of Empires 4. Last month, Relic revealed that Dawn of War: Definitive Edition sold 750,000 copies. That's a two-decade-old RTS with a budget price of $30/£24, and it's selling like hotcakes. Imagine what a new faction and missions for $10-15 could do.
Other classics could benefit too. A Red Alert 2 remaster never happened, but we did get a refresh of the original Command & Conquer and Red Alert in 2020. Games like Rise of Nations, Supreme Commander, Dune 2, and Star Wars: Empire at War are all ripe for re-releases with new content. The key is adding something new to justify the repackaging, since these old games often still run fine on modern PCs.
Warcraft 3 Reforged is following the same playbook as Age of Empires. It's a smart move, especially to salvage the legacy of a maligned remaster. And if it succeeds, it could pave the way for more belated expansions. The RTS genre has a deep well of nostalgia to draw from, and fans are clearly hungry for more.
So, what do you think? Would you buy new DLC for an old RTS favorite? Let us know in the comments!
