Steam Flooded with Needle in a Haystack Clones, Dev Apologizes

The creator of viral co-op game Needle In A Haystack Simulator jokingly apologizes as copycats flood Steam, sparking talk of 'the Robloxification of Steam'.
Ever wonder what happens when a silly idea goes viral? For Needle In A Haystack Simulator, it means a whole lot of copycats. The co-op PC game, where you and friends dig through a massive haystack (like five million pieces of hay!) to find a single needle, blew up on social media over the summer. And you know what that means: clones galore.
Shortly after it went viral, some eight copycats popped up on Steam early last week. But now there are even more. Folks started posting about it on Twitter, and the screenshot of 10 or so copies caught the attention of the original creator, Nas of Studio Bitdot. In response, Nas wrote, "As the dev of the one that went viral, I would like to formally apologize to the Steam storefront." It's a funny moment, but also a bit bleak.
One commenter dubbed it "the Robloxification of Steam," and honestly, that feels accurate. Just like Roblox is full of clones of trendy hits like Meccha Chameleon, Steam is now hosting its own wave of copycats. A quick search shows loads of Needle In A Haystack clones, and many of them rely on generative AI to some extent. That's the cherry on top, huh?
It's not a great look for Valve's platform, but it's also not easy to control. When something goes viral, it spreads everywhere. The real problem starts when copycats overtake genuine, original versions of an idea—or just steal it outright. From what we're seeing, that's likely the case with many of these Needle In A Haystack Simulator clones.
As for whether the copycats will be taken down? That remains to be seen. The original game is still coming sometime later this year. So if you're into quirky co-op experiences, keep an eye out for the real deal.
