Sony's PlayStation App Gets Surprise Social Overhaul

Sony is rolling out a redesigned PlayStation App with a dedicated social tab and friend activity widgets, arriving on iOS and Android within days.
Sony is quietly cooking up something for the PlayStation App, and it's all about keeping you closer to your friends. According to PushSquare, a redesigned version of the mobile app is heading to both iOS and Android within the next few days, and the focus is squarely on social features.
So what's actually changing? The biggest addition is a brand-new dedicated social tab sitting right at the bottom of the app. Think of it as a one-stop spot for everything friend-related, instead of digging through menus to see who's online.
On top of that, there's a new widget up at the top of the page that lets you quickly check what games your friends are currently playing. No more tapping around wondering if your squad is deep in a raid or just chilling in a lobby. It's right there the moment you open the app.
From the teaser images Sony has shown off, the app is also getting a bit of a visual refresh. It's not a full-blown redesign, but a subtle polish here and there that makes the whole thing feel a little more modern.
A PushSquare editor chimed in with their own take, noting they mostly use the PS App to browse the PlayStation Store and grab PS5 screenshots and videos to share on social media. But they're genuinely optimistic about the new friend-status feature, which says a lot about how useful this could be for everyday players.
It's a smart move from Sony, honestly. Your phone is already the thing you're glued to, so making the PlayStation App a better companion for your console life just makes sense. Being able to peek at what your friends are up to without booting up your PS5 is a small quality-of-life win that adds up.
The update is expected to land on both iOS and Android in just a few days. No exact date yet, but it sounds like it's right around the corner.
What do you think? Are you excited to stalk your friends' gaming habits from your phone, or is this a feature you'll never touch? Let us know in the comments.
