Sony CEO Won't Commit to PS6 Release Date, 2027 Launch in Doubt

With the PS5 now deep into the back half of its life cycle, the plan for Sony's next console is looking shakier than ever. The PS5 launched in 2020, and going by PlayStation's usual six-to-seven-year generational rhythm, the PS6 was originally expected to arrive around late 2027, lining up alongside Microsoft's next-gen Project Helix Xbox.

But in a recent interview, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said PlayStation still hasn't locked in a release date for the PS6. That phrasing leaves the door wide open for a slip past 2027, though a 2027 launch is still on the table.

So what's the holdup? According to analysis, manufacturing costs are likely the biggest factor weighing on the decision. An ongoing RAM shortage has already driven component prices up, putting pressure on the entire tech industry, while companies pour huge resources into generative AI hardware and infrastructure. The prevailing view is that if the global economy doesn't turn around quickly, the PS6 could end up costing more than $1,000.

The competitive landscape is shaping up very differently this time, too. Recently, Hideo Kojima revealed that PlayStation tried to cancel his new game Physint, and Xbox ultimately picked up the project. It's not a decisive win or loss on its own, but it's a clear sign that the PS6 vs. Project Helix battle won't look anything like the PS5 vs. Xbox Series X/S era.

For now, Sony hasn't officially announced the PS6's specs, release date, or price. Totoki's comments don't mean a delay is set in stone, and a 2027 launch is still possible, especially if Sony has already sorted out the necessary hardware and production arrangements. But one thing feels certain in the 2026 games industry: even a console generation handoff is hard to call these days.
