Should Your MMO Vanity Pets Do More Than Just Look Cute?

A longtime MMO pet lover wonders whether vanity companions should be more than just adorable sidekicks. Would functional pets make the genre better, or ruin the charm?
Be honest: how many hours have you spent tracking down the perfect vanity pet in your favorite MMO, only to have it do absolutely nothing but follow you around?
That's the exact question one longtime MMO fan is chewing on. Anyone who knows this player knows about their love for MMO pets. They'll usually be tromping about the game world with a lil' favored companion at their side, sharing whimsy and delight wherever they go. Sounds familiar, right? There's something genuinely great about having a tiny buddy trotting along behind you while you grind quests or queue up for dungeons.
But here's the catch: all that hanging out is pretty much all these pets ever do. And that's left this player feeling a little disappointed. It's a fair point. You can spend real money, event currency, or dozens of hours chasing a rare drop, and the payoff is a cosmetic companion that exists purely to look adorable. Once the novelty wears off, your pet is basically a decoration with a heartbeat.
So the big question is whether vanity pets should get a functional upgrade. Should they offer small buffs, handy utility, or little quality-of-life perks? Or does adding mechanics to something purely cosmetic ruin the whole point? After all, part of the charm of vanity pets is that they're optional, harmless, and just for fun. The moment they become "mandatory" for optimization, some players will feel forced to grind for them, and that cozy vibe could disappear fast.
There's a middle ground worth considering, though. Plenty of MMOs have experimented with pets that do minor things without tipping the balance, like collecting loot or offering tiny conveniences. The trick is keeping them from becoming another checkbox on a min-maxer's spreadsheet. If your pet can quietly help out while still being your lil' buddy, that feels like a win for everyone.
Of course, not everyone wants their companion reduced to a tool. For a lot of players, the whole appeal is the whimsy, the delight, and the simple joy of having a friend along for the ride. Turning every pet into a utility item might strip away exactly what makes them special in the first place.
So what's the verdict? Should MMO vanity pets stay purely cosmetic, or would you welcome a few functional perks? What do you think, and will you be picking up any new pets in your current game either way?
