Shanwaishan Hands-On: A Sandbox Survival Born From Chinese Myth

We went hands-on with Shanwaishan, a Chinese fantasy open-world sandbox survival game blending Shanhaijing mythology with deep environmental interaction and creative problem-solving.
Remember Shanwaishan? That Chinese fantasy open-world sandbox survival game that turned heads when it first surfaced last August? After nearly a year of radio silence, it's finally back with a fresh public demo, and we got to try it out at TapTap's recent gaming festival.
If you missed the initial buzz, here's the pitch: Shanwaishan mashes up Shanhaijing mythology with ancient Chinese civilization aesthetics, wraps it all in a gorgeous art style where nature and spiritual energy flow together, and tops it off with survival crafting plus creature taming. It stood out from the crowd back then, and this new demo shows the team is actually delivering on those early promises.
This time around, the demo plays like an extended tutorial, focusing on the game's opening main story beats. The core pillars that impressed everyone before, rich environmental interaction and multiple solutions to every problem, are still front and center. You feel them immediately in the starting cave section, where you gradually unlock abilities and solve puzzles.
The first ability you get, Gewu, lets you examine interactive objects to learn their properties. One puzzle had me place materials with the correct attributes on pedestals to open a door. I got stuck for a few minutes because I wasn't paying attention to material types. That same ability feeds into the crafting system, called Shougong. You combine materials freely to create tools on the fly: grab a handle-shaped piece of wood, snap on a stone, and you've got a hammer. Pair it with vine strips, and you've got a torch.
This freedom means every puzzle and fight has multiple solutions. The devs themselves say they have no idea what players will come up with. Say a dangerous creature blocks your path. You could fight it head-on with your crafted weapons, or use the ARPG combat system with stamina management. If it's perched on a wooden platform, burn the platform down with fire. Light a torch, whack a fire source to temporarily enchant your weapon, or just throw an explosive fruit. Need height but your stamina is low? Build your way up with the construction ability, placing walls, floors, and roofs to create your own path.
And if you just want chaos, physics and explosions let you destroy structures and reshape terrain. My favorite moment was a cave exit blocked by boulders. Instead of slowly chipping away with a hammer, I burned some vines holding a massive rock on a cliff above, kicked it loose, and watched it roll down and smash open a passage. The thud and the damage numbers were incredibly satisfying, even better than beating the first boss.
The demo also gives us our first real taste of the Shanhaijing world. New creatures roam the map: harmless-looking sheep that can suddenly kick you, tree spirits disguised as vegetation, zombie-like humanoid creatures that spawn at night, a giant wolf boss, and the mysterious green-furred deer from the original trailer. Taming is hinted at too, with a rabbit creature producing honey and a bell item used to lure and tame beasts. The team says these creatures will do more than just carry stuff or serve as mounts; they'll be key to the multiple-solutions gameplay.
It's hard not to get excited about the potential here. The systems are already interlocking in clever ways, and if the devs deliver on even half of what they've planned, the creative ceiling could be sky-high. What's also refreshing is that despite its deep Chinese cultural roots, Shanwaishan doesn't lean on vague talk about "Eastern aesthetics." It just focuses on being a fun, flexible game. What kind of ridiculous solutions would you try first?
