RuneScape Reignited Sparks Player Riot Over Fresh Start

RuneScape's new Reignited character type offers a fresh start with an isolated economy, but existing players fear it will split the community and make old progress worthless.
Ever spent thousands of hours grinding a game, only to watch the developers offer everyone a shiny new starting line? That's exactly how some RuneScape players are feeling right now.
Jagex has announced RuneScape Reignited, and at first glance it looks like a whole new version of the classic MMO. The blog and trailer talk about beginning your journey anew with a year of restoration changes. But it's actually a new character type inside the existing RS3, not a separate game. Think of it like an Ironman mode, but with a few extra friends along for the ride.
So what exactly is a Reignited character? These characters start from zero with no progress, and they share an isolated economy. You can play on existing worlds or new Reignited-exclusive ones. You can hang out and form clans with regular players, but you can't fight the same bosses or trade with them. There are no new updates exclusive to Reignited characters, and once you pick a character type, you're locked in. The announcement also promises a way to play without unpopular systems like Treasure Hunter, though that move away from microtransactions was actually announced earlier this year.
For new or lapsed players, that might sound pretty tempting. No fear of being 20 years behind, no pressure to catch up. But for veterans who never left, it feels like a threat to the community they've built. Some players even staged an in-game riot, with one X user joking about all 100 RS3 players showing up for the final riot to end all riots.
On Reddit, the mood is just as spicy. One thread with around 1,500 upvotes asks what players who spent thousands of hours gain from making a new account, and whether all that previous progress becomes worthless. Another commenter simply said they're not starting over because the game is way too grindy for that. The fear is real: group content is already hard to fill, and splitting the playerbase further could make it worse.
Jagex has stated that neither veteran nor Reignited characters will be favored, but not everyone is convinced their progress will matter the same way. It's a gamble to pull in fresh blood without alienating the loyal base, especially as RS4 looms and OSRS keeps piling on new features. Will Reignited reignite RS3, or just divide it? Time will tell.
What do you think? Would you start fresh, or are you staying loyal to your main?
