Resident Evil: Night of the Outbreak Hits 30M Yuan on Day One

The Resident Evil reboot scared up over 30 million yuan on its first day in Chinese theaters, with projections now eyeing a 400 million yuan-plus run.
The Resident Evil franchise is back in Chinese theaters after a nine-year absence, and it's already making serious noise at the box office.
Resident Evil: Night of the Outbreak opened nationwide on October 5, and by 10:06 a.m. that same day, it had already crossed 30 million yuan in total box office, according to Beacon Professional Edition data. That came with roughly 680,000 admissions. Maoyan Professional Edition confirmed the same milestone just after noon, putting the total at 30 million yuan with 674,000 admissions.
If you've been waiting for the series to return to the big screen here, you're clearly not alone.
This one's a reboot, directed by Zach Cregger and starring Austin Abrams. The story follows Brian, a medical courier, as he fights to survive in a Raccoon City overrun by a viral outbreak. So yes, it's keeping the classic Resident Evil setup intact while taking things in a fresh direction.
And the overseas buzz has been strong. The film currently sits at a 96% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a Metacritic score of 79. According to the source, that makes it the highest-rated video game movie adaptation and the best-reviewed entry in the live-action Resident Evil film series. Midnight screenings averaged 97.6 attendees per showing, setting a new record for the highest midnight average in roughly 11 years.
As for where it all ends up, Maoyan currently projects a total mainland run of about 487 million yuan, while Beacon's AI prediction sits at around 411 million yuan. Either way, it's looking like a big win.
It also helps that the film is the only Hollywood import in the 2026 National Day holiday lineup. That lack of direct competition showed immediately, with the movie claiming the top spot on the daily box office chart on its very first day.
