Raincoat Pikachu Card Sells for Record $8.4 Million

A rare 'Raincoat Pikachu' Pokemon card has sold for $8.4 million, becoming the second-most expensive Pokemon card ever auctioned. Only 100 were ever made as prizes for a 2015 competition.
Ever dreamed of owning a Pokemon card worth more than a house? Well, one lucky collector just dropped $8.4 million on a single Pikachu card, and it's not even a shiny Charizard.
Dubbed 'Raincoat Pikachu' by fans, this adorable card shows the electric mouse dressed for a downpour, umbrella in hand. But its cuteness isn't why it fetched such a staggering price. This card is rarer than a shiny Mew โ only 100 were ever made, and they were never sold in stores. Instead, they were given as personal prizes to the winner of a global competition.
The card was created by artist Fujishima for a 2015 competition inspired by Pokemon Art Academy for 3DS, which taught players how to draw Pokemon. Their design won under the 'Dress-Up Pikachu' category, and as a prize, they received 100 officially printed versions of their card. That extreme rarity is exactly why this particular card is so valuable.
The sale took place on September 28 via Fanatic Collection, as spotted by Men's Journal. It was rated PSA 10 Gem Mint and earned a whopping $8,400,000 with buyer's premium. That makes it the second-most expensive Pokemon card ever sold at auction, behind only Logan Paul's Pikachu Illustrator card, which went for an eye-watering $16.4 million.
But wait โ didn't a similar Raincoat Pikachu sell for just $19,200 back in 2025? Yep, our friends at Dexerto worked that out. So why the massive jump in just a year? The 'Mint' addendum for the 2026 equivalent likely played a role, making it even more desirable for collectors. When a card is this rare and this highly graded, prices can skyrocket.
Of course, you don't need $8 million to enjoy modern Pokemon cards, but prices are still inflated thanks to demand and resellers. If you're hunting for deals, the best offers for 30th Celebration are currently at Walmart (or Amazon UK for those across the pond). You can find more discounts in our guide on where to buy Pokemon TCG 30th Celebration.
No matter the valuation, this card has the distinction of being downright adorable. There's something very sweet about its goofy, cheerful smile and an aesthetic that looks like it's been taken from a picture book. It certainly cheered us up this morning.
So, what do you think? Is $8.4 million a fair price for a piece of Pokemon history, or would you rather spend that on a lifetime supply of booster packs? Will you be picking up any 30th Celebration cards? Let us know in the comments!
