PS5 Gets AI Graphics Boost: QSSR Coming to Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei

Sony's new QSSR AI upscaling tech brings sharper visuals to base PS5, with Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei first in line.
Wondering if your trusty base PS5 can still keep up with the latest visual tech? Sony just dropped some good news that might make you hold off on that PS5 Pro upgrade.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a brand-new AI image enhancement technology called QSSR, and it's coming to the standard PS5. That means you won't need to swap out your console to get clearer, more stable game visuals. The first games to support it? Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.
So what exactly is QSSR? Think of it as a lighter version of PSSR, the AI upscaling tech Sony has been pushing on the PS5 Pro. Both come from Sony's collaboration with AMD on Project Amethyst. The key difference is that QSSR is designed to run on regular PS5 hardware, which means it demands less computing power. Sony admits the results won't quite match what PSSR delivers on PS5 Pro, but it still improves detail and stability for base PS5 games.
For you as a player, the difference shows up in the little things. Details that used to look blurry due to low resolution, like characters, distant scenery, streets, and objects in complex scenes, should appear sharper. It also helps reduce that annoying flickering or instability in fine details when the camera moves. Basically, your games should look cleaner and more consistent without any hardware upgrade.
The first wave of support comes from Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine and Sucker Punch Productions' Ghost of Yotei. Both games will get updates that add a QSSR graphics option on standard PS5. Insomniac says QSSR lets Wolverine render more detail in complex environments like streets and alleys. The Ghost of Yotei team notes the tech improves subtle visual elements on characters and in the environment.
And this is just the beginning. Sony plans to make QSSR available to other PlayStation development teams, with more PS5 games expected to add support down the line. So even if you're not picking up a PS5 Pro, your current console is about to get a nice visual upgrade.
Will you be checking out QSSR in Wolverine or Ghost of Yotei? Let us know in the comments!
