PlayStation Creator Says Games Have Stagnated Creatively

Ken Kutaragi believes games have stagnated creatively despite better graphics, but says the industry is ready for a major leap forward.
Ever feel like games look better than ever but don't feel all that different? You're not alone. Ken Kutaragi, the man behind the original PlayStation, thinks the industry has stagnated creatively.
Speaking at Japan's University of Electro-Communications, Kutaragi said that despite massive growth in scale and graphics, the approach to making games hasn't really changed since his PlayStation days. As reported by 4Gamer and translated by Automaton, he believes the industry is at a major turning point and ready to advance to the "next stage."
But here's the twist: Kutaragi doesn't see gaming as a mature industry. Even though it's now bigger than film, TV, and music, he says we haven't hit our limits yet. There are still breakthroughs to be made.
So what's holding us back? According to Kutaragi, it's a lack of curiosity. He recalled how the original PlayStation team set out to "change the world" by creating cutting-edge technology, not following others. He urged developers and students to adopt that same leading mindset, especially younger folks. "The moment you lose your curiosity and think, this is probably as good as it gets, it's all over," he said.
Kutaragi's words hit close to home. The Western gaming industry can't keep going as it is—companies overspent during COVID, and AI is driving up costs. Advancements in tech aren't as exciting when people can't afford them, and those who can might not even notice. Making something impressive yet accessible seems like the smarter bet.
To get to that next stage, Kutaragi says we need to look back at what made the industry great: a spirit of innovation and leading rather than following. It's a message that applies to developers, students, and anyone who cares about where games go next.
What do you think? Are games stagnating creatively, or are we on the verge of something big?
