Nintendo Explains Switch 2 Key Cards: Physical, But Not Really

Nintendo has published a detailed breakdown of the Switch 2's three game formats, spotlighting the new 'key card' that looks physical but only holds a license key.
Nintendo just dropped a handy explainer on how games work on the Switch 2, and there's a new format in town that's got everyone talking: the key card.
So here's the deal. The Switch 2 has three ways to get your games: traditional physical game cards, digital versions, and the new key card (officially called a game access card). Nintendo's official post walks through exactly how each one behaves.
Traditional physical cards are the ones you already know and love. The full game data lives right on the cartridge, so you just pop it in and play. You can also lend it to friends and family, no strings attached.
Digital games, meanwhile, get downloaded to your console or a microSD Express card and are tied to your Nintendo Account. The nice part? They can be borrowed within your family group.
Now for the star of the show: the key card. It looks exactly like a regular game card and even comes in a physical box, so your shelf will look perfectly normal. But here's the catch, there's no actual game inside. The card only stores a license key.
The first time you insert a key card, you'll need an internet connection to download the entire game. And even after that download finishes, you still have to keep the key card plugged into the console to play. No card, no game.
The upside? Key cards aren't tied to any account. You can freely lend them to anyone, and as long as their console hops online to grab the data, they're good to go.
It's an interesting middle ground, physical enough to share, digital enough to need a download. What do you think of the key card approach? Let us know in the comments!
