Modder Corrupts Own Total War Mod in AI Uprising

Veteran modder Venris deliberately corrupted his popular Total War: Warhammer III mod, SFO: Grimhammer III, to block unauthorized AI-generated reuploads and threatens to make it private.
What happens when someone takes your passion project and feeds it to an AI without asking? For veteran modder Venris, that's not a hypothetical—it's exactly what happened with his massively popular Total War: Warhammer III mod, SFO: Grimhammer III. And he's not taking it lying down.
Venris has been crafting Simply Fun Overhaul (SFO) mods for Total War: Warhammer for years, with a Patreon helping fund development. SFO: Grimhammer III overhauls the base game to be closer to Warhammer lore, tweaking everything from campaign and battle mechanics to economy and customization. It's a labor of love nearly a decade in the making.
But recently, people started using AI to release sub-mods of SFO: Grimhammer III that work with updated versions of Creative Assembly's game—without permission. In response, Venris deliberately corrupted his own mod so it stops working with those unauthorized uploads. He also threatened to make the mod private if things escalate.
"Due to the growing number of unauthorized reuploads of SFO: Grimhammer III, and more importantly, the use of AI in the process, I have deliberately corrupted the mod to prevent it from functioning with such unauthorized uploads," Venris said in a statement online. "If this situation continues to escalate, I will make SFO: Grimhammer III private."
He added: "SFO: Grimhammer is the result of nearly 10 years of passion and love for this community and the fantasy world. As such, I do not permit anyone to take my work without permission. Especially not for AI-related purposes. Support modders, not AI."
The incident comes amid an explosion of AI-generated "mods" that have raised eyebrows across the industry. Viral clips show AI-generated "game-merging mods," AI versions of games on unofficial platforms, and AI tools adding features or fusing games together. The legality of these releases is murky, and many traditional modders are shocked and disappointed, questioning the viability of their hobby. For publishers, the impact could be existential—why buy a new Fallout if AI can spit one out in minutes? This week, the creator of a viral AI-generated Fallout: New York pulled it offline after a cease and desist from Bethesda, which fans celebrated.
Not everyone supports Venris. "Oh no the horror," one person mocked. "Someone forget to get a rubberstamp from a bureaucrat modder whose work depends on the original game devs and publishers anyway. You guys are such losers." But most backed him. "Anyone that thinks that you are doing something bad here doesn't have experience with someone stealing something that they have spent a major chunk of their life making and it shows," one supporter wrote.
So where do you stand? Should modders have the right to sabotage their own work to fight AI theft, or is this an overreaction? Will you be picking up SFO: Grimhammer III—or does this whole saga make you think twice?
