Minecraft Hits 425M Sales, Unveils First New Dimension in 14 Years

Minecraft Live 2025 revealed The Sift, the game's first new dimension in over 14 years, plus 425 million copies sold and a Switch 2 release date.
Did you hear that? Minecraft just broke its own record—again. At this year's Minecraft Live event, Mojang announced the blocky sandbox has now sold over 425 million copies. That's not just a lot of blocks; it's a whole lot of mining. And if that wasn't enough, the game is getting its first new dimension in nearly 15 years.
That new dimension is called The Sift. According to an official blog post, it's "beautiful, vibrant, and teeming with souls." It's also the first dimension added in over fourteen years, joining the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. The Sift features areas like the Meadow and the Carapace, and it exists within Minecraft Dungeons 2's newly-interconnected world. You'll be able to visit it by jumping or stumbling into rifts that occasionally pop up. But here's the catch: The Sift debuts in Minecraft Dungeons 2 next week, before eventually coming to Minecraft's Bedrock and Java editions next year.
If you're more of a base Minecraft player, don't worry—there's plenty for you too. The next drop goes into icy, underground territory. It brings ice caves, a whole new ice biome, calcite blocks, ice crystals, and icicles. That's a lot of ice. As the studio explains, "Icicles grow naturally on the ceiling, and the ice crystals grow on the ground and emit a soft light." Sounds like the perfect place to cool off after a Nether trip.
And if you game on Nintendo, mark your calendar: Minecraft is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 next month, on October 27. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma also shared some eye-opening stats about the game's enduring popularity. "More than 300,000 people play Minecraft for the first time on an average day," she recently tweeted. "After 17+ years and 425M+ copies sold, I love that Minecraft is still finding new players and giving longtime ones new things to discover." That's a lot of new miners every single day.
So whether you're a veteran who's been digging since the alpha days or someone who just picked up the game yesterday, there's never been a better time to jump back in. The Sift looks like a wild ride, the ice biome will chill you out, and Switch 2 owners get a fresh way to play. What do you think of The Sift? Will you be picking up Minecraft Dungeons 2 to explore it early? Let us know in the comments!
