Meta's VR Glasses Hit Spring 2027 at $1,299, But Privacy Concerns Loom

Meta's new VR Glasses launch Spring 2027 for $1,299, focusing on portability and mixed reality, but privacy issues remain unaddressed.
Did you catch Meta Connect 2026? If you were hoping for a Quest 4, you might be disappointed. Instead, Meta is going all-in on smart glasses and wearable AI. The big reveal? The Meta VR Glasses, launching Spring 2027 for $1,299. No UK price yet, and controllers are sold separately. Ouch.
So what's the deal with these glasses? They're all about folding, portable convenience. The Snapdragon Reality Elite processor isn't even inside them—it's in a separate battery puck that fits in your pocket and lasts up to three hours. You can plug the Glasses into any USB device and use them as a display, but they take a mixed-reality, hand-tracking approach, much like the Apple Vision Pro.
Why the hefty price tag? The VR Glasses pack two Micro-OLED displays with 5K, Infinite, Dolby Vision resolution per eye, and weigh just 100g—down from the Quest 3's 515g. But they only have a 70-degree horizontal FOV, compared to the 110 degrees most VR headsets offer. So it's a trade-off: lighter and sharper, but narrower view.
Don't call these the Quest 4. They're not the successor to the Quest 3 or 3S. The price alone shows they're not about making VR accessible like Quest headsets were. Will we see a true Quest successor? Depends on how well this wearable approach does. While the VR Glasses can play any game on the Quest store and run mixed-reality apps, gaming isn't the main focus. Meta says over 75 VR games will be revamped for hand-tracking at launch. You can also hook them to a console or PC as a massive virtual display. But the form factor, FOV, and lack of controllers don't scream gaming.
Meta's shift makes sense. Quest headsets aren't profitable due to their low prices, but Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses are. Reality Labs had layoffs this year, and Meta's biggest gaming studios have been shuttered. Despite the CTO saying Meta isn't done with VR, the writing's on the wall: glasses over headsets.
But wearable devices bring privacy issues. Meta's smart glasses have faced concerns, and with the new generation including 'Muse' (Meta's agentic AI), little has been done to address them. Yes, VR Glasses are more visible, but the push toward wearable AI means more covert video capture. A few weeks ago, Meta bricked smart glasses' cameras if you disabled the recording light—a response to thousands of users. But even with the light, privacy concerns remain when AI can access the camera without it.
Given Meta's history with data and questionable links to China, these issues will only grow. If you're a gamer shopping for VR, maybe look elsewhere. The Steam Frame just arrived, PSVR 2 is viable, and PC gamers have the Pimax Dream Air. Or stick to flat-screen gaming with the best gaming PCs, laptops, and retro handhelds. What do you think—will you be picking up Meta's VR Glasses?
