Marvel's Wolverine Sales Debate Erupts as Retail Staff Push Back

A PlayStation fan account celebrated Wolverine selling out, but retail workers say shelves are still full. The clash comes as analysts report strong early numbers but warn of a shorter sales tail.
So, is Marvel's Wolverine actually selling out everywhere, or are the shelves quietly gathering dust? That's the question tearing up social media right now, and the answer depends entirely on who you ask.
It all kicked off when a PlayStation-focused account called PlayStation Domination posted a victory lap on X, claiming Wolverine had completely sold out. In their words, the haters got it badly wrong and Sony fans were proven right. Pretty bold stuff, as you'd expect.
But the comments section didn't exactly play along. Retail workers showed up in force to push back, and one response in particular pulled no punches. A user who said they handle inventory counts for several Target stores through a third-party company told the account to save its energy. According to them, every store they visit is packed with copies of the game, and even checking Zebra device stock numbers suggested it wasn't moving well.
They didn't stop there, either. The same person claimed they had personally set up the first two endcaps under a Sony contract, and said the games had barely budged. They even noted that a few copies were still sitting in the PlayStation inline section slots near the racetrack aisle. That's about as unglamorous as retail gets.
Here's where things get genuinely interesting, though. The retail chatter stands in sharp contrast to data previously released by Alinea Analytics. That firm reported that Marvel's Wolverine moved roughly 1.9 million copies in its first three days, pulling in around $130 million in revenue. If those figures hold up, it's the best-performing new PlayStation first-party title on PS5 in 2026. Not exactly a flop on paper.
But analyst Rhys Elliott offered a note of caution that's worth keeping in mind. He pointed out that the heated social media arguments swirling around the game could end up limiting its commercial long tail. Unlike the Spider-Man series, which earned rave reviews and stayed evergreen for years, Elliott expects Wolverine's sales curve to be shorter and more volatile. Early momentum, in other words, doesn't guarantee a marathon.
So what's the real story? Strong opening numbers and full store shelves can absolutely coexist, especially if supply was generous from day one. A sold-out online listing doesn't always mean every physical retailer is cleaned out, and a stacked endcap doesn't automatically mean a game bombed. The truth is probably messier than either side of this argument wants to admit.
For now, the debate rages on, and both camps have their receipts. If you've been out hunting for a copy, what are you actually seeing in stores near you? Let us know in the comments.
