LOTRO's Riders of Rohan: A Look Back at the 2012 Expansion

We revisit Lord of the Rings Online's fourth expansion, Riders of Rohan, which launched in October 2012 and was one of the game's biggest content pushes.
Remember when Lord of the Rings Online took us to Rohan? It's been over a decade since the MMO's fourth expansion, Riders of Rohan, galloped onto the scene in October 2012. And if you were there, you probably remember the hype.
Riders of Rohan was a big deal. According to the original article, it was second only to Mines of Moria in terms of ambition and promotion. The team pulled out all the stops to make this expansion a massive event, with a ton of marketing and a hefty content drop. It was the strongest effort to date to make a huge splash.
Why all the fuss? Rohan is one of the most iconic regions in Middle-earth, and players had been waiting to ride with the Rohirrim for years. The expansion finally delivered that fantasy, introducing mounted combat and the vast plains of Rohan to explore. It was a bold step for LOTRO, and it showed just how much the developers believed in the game's future.
Looking back, it's easy to see why Riders of Rohan got so much attention. It wasn't just another expansion; it was a statement. The team wanted to prove that LOTRO could still deliver epic, world-expanding content that rivaled anything else on the market. And for many players, it did exactly that.
Of course, not everything was perfect. Mounted combat was a divisive addition, and some fans felt the expansion didn't quite live up to the impossibly high bar set by Mines of Moria. But even so, Riders of Rohan remains a memorable chapter in LOTRO's long history.
So what do you think? Did you ride into Rohan back in 2012? What are your memories of the expansion? Let us know in the comments!
