League of Legends MMO Still in the Works, Says Riot Co-Founder

Riot Games' co-founder calls the League of Legends MMO a 'grail quest,' confirming it's still in development five years after its initial announcement.
Remember when Riot Games teased an MMO set in the League of Legends universe back in 2020? It felt like a dream come true for fans. But since then, it's been mostly radio silence. Well, co-founder Marc Merrill has finally spoken up, calling the project the studio's 'grail quest.'
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Merrill responded to a fan asking about the MMO's status. He didn't give a release date or any juicy details, but he made it clear that the team is still working on it. 'It remains our grail quest,' he said, which is both reassuring and a little intimidating. After all, the grail wasn't exactly easy to find.
For those who need a refresher: Riot announced the MMO in December 2020, with executive producer Greg Street (formerly of World of Warcraft fame) leading the charge. Since then, we've seen concept art and heard whispers, but nothing concrete. In 2022, Street even admitted that the project was 'rethinking' its direction, which led to some speculation that it might be in trouble. But now, with Merrill's comments, it's clear the dream is still alive.
So, what can we expect from a League of Legends MMO? Well, if Riot's other projects are anything to go by, it'll be polished, ambitious, and deeply tied to the lore of Runeterra. Imagine exploring regions like Demacia, Noxus, or Piltover, maybe even interacting with champions like Lux or Jinx. The potential is huge.
But let's be real: MMOs are massive undertakings. They take years to develop, and even then, they can stumble. Just look at the recent struggles of some big-name MMOs. Riot knows this, which might explain why they're taking their time. As Merrill put it, it's a 'grail quest'—a legendary challenge that demands nothing less than perfection.
In the meantime, Riot has plenty on its plate. Arcane season 2 just dropped, and they're constantly updating League, Valorant, and other games. But for those of us who've been waiting for that MMO, every little update feels like a drop of water in a desert.
So, are you still hyped for the League MMO, or have you given up hope? Let us know in the comments below!
