Kojima's Physint: Sony Balked at Huge Price Tag, Xbox Stepped In Cheaper

Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reports Sony walked away from Kojima's Physint over a sky-high budget, slow progress, and IP ownership โ and Xbox reportedly paid less to take over.
So remember Physint, the stealth-action game Hideo Kojima announced back in 2024? It was supposed to be a PlayStation thing. Now it's an Xbox thing. And thanks to a fresh Bloomberg report, we finally know why Sony bailed โ and it's basically a money story.
According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, Sony and Kojima Productions spent months in talks before things fell apart. The sticking points? Budget, development timeline, and exclusivity terms. But the big one, per multiple sources, was the price. Kojima reportedly asked Sony for an extremely high development quote โ and that sticker shock is what made Sony's decision-makers back off.
It wasn't just the money, though. The project was moving slowly, Kojima Productions didn't want to lock the game to a single platform, and the IP itself would stay with the studio the whole time. Even if Sony got a timed console exclusivity window, it would never actually own the franchise. For a massive investment, that's a tough sell โ you're paying premium money without getting permanent dibs on the property.
There's also a leadership angle here. Key Sony executives who originally helped set up the deal, including former PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, have since left the company. That turnover indirectly helped push the project off the rails, according to the report.
Kojima Productions has already responded to the wave of rumors, asking fans to stay level-headed and not swallow every leak whole. Fair enough โ it's always smart to wait for official word before treating any of this as gospel.
Schreier also added an interesting footnote: Xbox didn't match the huge number Kojima originally pitched to Sony. In his view, Microsoft's actual investment is lower than what Sony was asked for. So Xbox may have landed Physint at a relative discount โ or at least a different set of terms.
Either way, it's a wild turn for a game that was revealed with so much fanfare. Sony's loss looks like Xbox's gain, and Kojima gets to keep his IP. Whether that gamble pays off for Microsoft is the million-dollar question.
What do you think โ did Sony make the right call walking away, or will it regret letting Physint slip to Xbox? Drop your take in the comments.
