Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Remake: How Fans Are Shaping the Reboot

Ubisoft's upcoming remake of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is a bold 3D reimagining, and the devs are leaning on the game's dedicated community to ensure they don't ruin your favorite game.
Remember pouring hours into Heroes of Might and Magic 3, commanding armies across isometric maps that felt like living board games? Well, Ubisoft just announced a remake of the 1999 classic at Gamescom, and it's not just a fresh coat of paint. The game is set to hit PC and consoles in 2027, swapping the original's 2D isometric view for a fully 3D world, complete with dynamic weather and seasons. But here's the kicker: they're bringing in the game's most passionate fans to make sure they don't screw it up.
Jean-Felix Monin, Creative Director at Ubisoft China, recently spoke with IGN about how the still-thriving Heroes of Might and Magic 3 community has been a guiding light for the project. "There's this community, there's this great game that people have been asking for a remake of for years now, and so we really want to do right by them," he said. To that end, Ubisoft brought in key community figures—people they'd worked with on other projects like the board game—to serve as consultants. These trusted voices helped the team navigate the game's biggest changes, acting as a north star for any tweaks to the gameplay.
If you're worried that your beloved strategy RPG is about to get the "modernized" treatment, Monin has some reassuring words. "The gameplay is considered a masterpiece," he said. "We took the decision really early on to not touch the gameplay. So, all the systems, all the balancing, had to stay exactly the same." He even tackled the community's biggest fear head-on: "Did you destroy my favorite game? We couldn't destroy it because we didn't touch it." Instead, the team focused on what they could add without disrupting the core experience—like the new 3D graphics and quality-of-life features designed to help modern players ease into a game that "might be a bit of a gap for people to get into."
One major addition is a fresh prologue campaign, which serves a dual purpose. Monin explained that the original game lacked a proper tutorial, throwing players in with just a manual—something most gamers today won't bother reading. "There had been a tutorial made before, but that wasn't great," he admitted. "So we really thought there was a real need to teach this game to new players." The prologue will not only introduce newcomers to the game's unique mechanics but also add new content, including some fancy cinematics to draw you into the story.
It's a delicate balancing act: honoring a beloved classic while making it accessible to a new generation. But with the community's input and a clear "gameplay first" philosophy, Ubisoft might just pull it off. The game is still a few years out, but the early signs are promising. Will you be picking this up when it launches in 2027, or are you sticking with the original? Let us know in the comments!
