Helldivers Movie Pushed to 2028: Why That's Good News

Sony delays the Helldivers movie from November 2027 to June 2028. With Alan Ritchson replacing Jason Momoa, the extra time could be a blessing.
Did you hear? The Helldivers movie just got delayed again—this time to 2028. But before you grab your pitchfork, hear us out: this might actually be a good thing.
According to an update from Sony (via Deadline), the film has shifted from November 10, 2027, to June 9, 2028. That's a pretty big jump. In its old slot, Ridley Scott's Treasure Island—starring Hugh Jackman as Long John Silver—will now release on November 11, 2027.
Now, delays usually sting. But for Helldivers, the extra time could be exactly what the doctor ordered. Earlier this year, Jason Momoa exited the project, leaving a super-soldier-sized hole in the cast. Deadline recently reported that Reacher star Alan Ritchson was in talks for the role, and now it's confirmed: Ritchson is officially replacing Momoa.
Director Justin Lin previously teased at CinemaCon, "Helldivers balances satire with humanity... and the only person who I think can pull this off is Jason Momoa." That was before Momoa left. But honestly, Ritchson is a fantastic replacement. If you've seen him in Reacher, you know he can handle both action and humor—exactly what Helldivers needs.
Plot details are still top secret, but the movie is expected to be based on Helldivers 2, which follows an elite group of soldiers protecting Super Earth from aliens in an intergalactic war. With a new lead and a new release date, the extra time behind the scenes should help the team get it right.
In the meantime, Reacher season 4 just wrapped up on Prime Video, so you can get your Ritchson fix there. And if you're hungry for more game adaptations, check out our guide to all the upcoming video game adaptations.
What do you think? Are you happy about the delay, or does waiting until 2028 feel like forever?
