GTA 6 at $80 Could Spark Higher Game Prices, Dev Says

Warhorse co-founder Martin Klima hopes GTA 6's $80 price tag leads other publishers to charge more, arguing it's necessary for the industry's survival.
Ever feel like you're paying more for games but getting less? Well, one developer thinks we should actually be paying even more—and he's hoping GTA 6 leads the charge.
Martin Klima, co-founder of Kingdom Come developer Warhorse, told PC Gamer that raising game prices would "help a lot," but "everybody's scared to death" to make the first move. "Now, hopefully, GTA will blaze the trail, and it will allow us to increase the cost," he said. He added that Rockstar and Take-Two are among the only companies who can "afford, or who can dare" to raise prices like this. Klima also said price increases are "long overdue and also necessary for this business to survive."
It's not hard to see why. Developers are closing, games are getting cancelled, and layoffs are happening regularly. Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick previously defended price hikes by saying production costs have increased by 300%. Former PlayStation exec Shawn Layden said in 2025 that game prices should have gone up with every console generation for the past 20 years. "I think it's because everyone's afraid," he told GI.biz. "No one wants to be the first one to raise the price, because you're afraid to lose traffic. So what you do is you just end up eating into your operating income, your profit margin."
Layden also had a colorful way of putting it: "There were more sports cars in the parking lot in the PS1 era than there were in the PS4 era, because if you're selling 20 million units at $60 for something that only cost you $10 million to make, that's different than selling 20 million units at $60 for something that cost you $160 million to make." To make up the difference, developers have leaned on microtransactions, DLC, and battle passes—and if prices go up, those trends will likely continue.
GTA 6 is already priced at $80 for its standard edition. Before that was revealed, a Bank of America analyst said Take-Two should charge $80 to spur other publishers to follow suit. We've already seen $80 games: Nintendo charges $80 for Mario Kart World, and its newly released Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave costs $80 physical or $70 digital. But not every game is priced the same—Take-Two launched Mafia: The Old Country for $50, and it was a success.
Take-Two was among the first to push prices from $60 to $70 with NBA 2K21 in 2020, and now $70 is the norm. GTA 6 launches November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a $100 Ultimate Edition and a $400 collector's edition that doesn't even include the game. Zelnick said earlier this year that Rockstar could have charged more given the massive demand but chose not to. Beyond game sales, GTA 6 will likely get some form of GTA Online eventually, which will no doubt print money.
So, will GTA 6's $80 price tag become the new normal? And are you okay with paying more if it means fewer layoffs and cancelled games? Let us know in the comments!
