Ex-Rockstar Director Says GTA 6 Leaks Are a 'Nothing Burger'

Former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij tells fans to calm down, stating the latest GTA 6 leaks won't derail marketing plans or hurt the game.

Have you been glued to social media over the past week, trying to catch every single new GTA 6 leak? If so, a former Rockstar veteran wants you to take a deep breath and relax. Obbe Vermeij, the former technical director at Rockstar North who worked on classics like GTA 3, GTA: San Andreas, and GTA 4, has weighed in on the drama, telling fans to calm down because the recent wave of leaks is a total "nothing burger."

Vermeij explained that Rockstar's silence is entirely intentional. It is all part of their marketing playbook to build maximum hype, and these unauthorized clips are not going to derail their plans. Recent reports back this up, confirming Rockstar will not be altering its schedule due to the leaks. That means the Netflix premiere of the game's "extended look" is still locked in for August 27.

Why aren't the devs panicking? According to Vermeij, about 90% of future players are not spending their time online hunting down video snippets. Most people simply don't have the time and want to avoid spoilers altogether. While he acknowledged the development team working on GTA 6 is probably "a little annoyed" about the leaks, he stressed that it does not go beyond that.

To put things into perspective, Vermeij looked back at the infamous "Hot Coffee" scandal during the GTA: San Andreas era. That massive controversy involved an unlocked interactive sex minigame in the PC edition, which prompted then-Senator Hillary Clinton to call for an FTC inquiry and resulted in Take-Two paying out settlements. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser described it as "draining and upsetting." Vermeij noted that while Hot Coffee was a management nightmare in New York, it did not affect the Edinburgh dev team. Compared to that mess, Vermeij says today's leaks are just a "tiny blip," predicting GTA 6 will be phenomenal and sell for the next 15 years or so.

This latest wave of leaks began earlier this month, showcasing footage of various activities and possible new mechanics. Some clips claim to show protagonist Jason visiting a nudist colony, while others hint at players manually refilling gas in their cars or even using an in-game currency tradable in real life. While Rockstar and Take-Two have yet to identify whoever is behind it, the leakers clearly appear to have access to the title.

Of course, the game has been targeted before. Back in 2022, GTA 6 suffered its first massive gameplay leak. The 18-year-old suspect, Arion Kurtaj, was originally ordered to a secure hospital for life, though reports this July revealed he has since been moved to a normal prison while awaiting a new trial.
