Ex-PlayStation Boss: GTA 7 or a Chinese Game Could Top GTA 6

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida says the next gaming phenomenon after GTA 6 could be GTA 7 โ or a game from a Chinese studio, warning that no one should underestimate Chinese companies.
So GTA 6 is going to be huge. Like, history-book huge. But what comes after? That's the question The Verge recently put to former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, and his answer is worth paying attention to.
Yoshida didn't just default to the obvious sequel. Sure, he admitted that 15 years from now, the record-breaker could well be GTA 7. But he also floated a much more interesting possibility: a game from a Chinese company.
"Maybe 15 years later, it's GTA 7, we'll see," Yoshida said. "Or some Chinese companies, they may try to emulate or compete with that. Because there will be about a 15-year gap after GTA 6, so nobody should underestimate Chinese companies' strength."
That's a pretty bold call from someone who spent years at the top of PlayStation, and it makes you wonder who he might have in mind. He didn't name names, but the implication is clear โ the next global gaming juggernaut might not come from the usual Western studios.
Yoshida also offered some insight into why GTA 6 is such a rare beast. Normally, he explained, game development forces you to make trade-offs between scale, detail, and interactivity. You can have one or two, but rarely all three at once.
GTA 6, however, seems to be going for everything โ all at once. According to Yoshida, Rockstar is pushing detail, content volume, world size, interactivity, and scene density simultaneously. "We've never made anything close to that scale before," he said.
That scale is exactly why the gap between mainline GTA entries is so enormous, and why Yoshida thinks the window is wide open for someone else to step up. If it takes 15 years for the next one, that's a decade and a half of opportunity for ambitious studios โ especially those in China, where development talent and budgets have been growing fast.
Of course, this is all speculation. GTA 6 isn't even out yet, and we're already talking about GTA 7 and hypothetical Chinese blockbusters. But that's the kind of shadow this game casts. It's not just a release โ it's a benchmark that reshapes what everyone else thinks is possible.
So what do you think? Will GTA 7 be the one to break the internet again, or is Yoshida onto something with the China prediction? Drop your take in the comments.
