Discord's Age Verification Rollout Sparks Privacy Debate

Discord launches its controversial age assurance system, automatically sorting users into adult, teen, or unconfirmed groups. The move follows a co-founder apology but proceeds as planned.
Remember when Discord's co-founder apologized for the whole age verification mess? Well, it's happening anyway. Discord has officially rolled out its age "assurance" system, and it's already stirring up controversy.
Here's how it works: Discord automatically sorts you into one of three groups—adult, teen, or unconfirmed—based on context like how long you've had your account and what servers you're in. If you're lumped into the teen category, you'll face restrictions like blurred sensitive messages and no access to Stage channels. Think you've been mislabeled? You can correct it by providing a photo of your government-issued ID to one of Discord's age verification vendors. Yeah, it's as invasive as it sounds.
Back in February, CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy penned a self-effacing letter apologizing for the whole thing. But strategically, he never committed to ditching age assurance or doing a substantial rework. Now, most of what Discord is implementing is exactly what he outlined back then. In a new blog post, Vishnevskiy repeats, "More than 90% of you won't be asked to confirm your age." He also acknowledges, "Any form of age assurance, and the possibility of sharing something biometric or an ID, is a controversial topic. Rightfully so, because of what it represents and where internet legislation around the world is heading: toward a more gated internet."
Vishnevskiy concedes, "This is bigger than us," and suggests Discord has no choice but to analyze your personal data. "Laws requiring age assurance are expanding around the world. Rather than waiting to be told how to do it, we're launching our own privacy-preserving approach." He admits, "No model is perfect, and ours is going to make mistakes, though we believe our model performs as accurately as other available methods. [...] We'll keep learning and continue working to improve the model over time, even as the misses inevitably make their way into memes and social posts."
In February, the only methods planned were facial age estimation or an ID scan. But after user feedback, Discord committed to offering more options that meet high privacy standards. So, depending on your region or device, you might also be able to prove your age using credit card information, your age range as recorded by the Apple App Store, or a passkey from the website AgeKey.
Vishnevskiy seems to anticipate your frustration—everything is getting worse, and every tech company wants your data. But he says you'll have to get over it. "I grew up on the early internet. It's where I found people who were into the same things I was, even when no one around me shared those interests, and that changed the direction of my life," he says. "The internet has changed since then, and we don't live in a perfect world, which is why our goal is the same one I wrote about in February." At least he's consistent.
In other Discord news, the platform will "evaluate the validity and scope before responding" to a controversial GTA 6 leaks court order, but it "has not yet been served." What do you think about Discord's age verification rollout? Will you be verifying your age, or are you looking for alternatives?
