D&D and WoW Crossover: Is a Return Trip to Azeroth Coming?

Dungeons & Dragons is getting a World of Warcraft sourcebook, but could WoW get a D&D crossover in return? WotC and Blizzard tease possibilities at Gen Con.

Ever dreamed of rolling dice in the World of Warcraft universe? Soon, you'll be able to, as Dungeons & Dragons is officially crossing over with Blizzard's MMO powerhouse. The new sourcebook promises to bring Azeroth to your tabletop, complete with WoW-inspired classes, subclasses, spells, and even enemies to fight.

But here's the twist: this crossover might not be a one-way street. During an interview at Gen Con with GameSpot, Dan Ayoub (Head of D&D) and Holly Longdale (VP of World of Warcraft) dropped some heavy hints about a possible reverse crossover. When asked if D&D could ever make its way into WoW's digital realms, Longdale was coy: "I cannot say at this time. Not at this time. This is a grand experiment. I am really excited to see where it goes." Ayoub added with a smirk, "As we exchange knowing glances."

If a reciprocal crossover is in the works, BlizzCon 2025 is the most likely place for an announcement. Mark your calendars for September 12, when Blizzard's big event kicks off with a grand opening ceremony. That same day, WoW will take the spotlight with a 45-minute "What's Next" panel on the main stage—prime real estate for a major reveal. And if the speculation isn't hot enough, the D&D team might also be eyeing another Blizzard franchise: StarCraft. Ayoub teased that a StarCraft D&D setting would be a dream come true, to which Longdale jokingly replied, "I know a guy."

While Wizards of the Coast has been busy integrating other IPs into Magic: The Gathering and D&D, Ayoub reassured fans that the core games will always remain a priority. So even as these exciting crossovers roll out, you can expect plenty of support for the classic D&D experience.
