Castlevania Turns 40: Free NES Classic and Big Retro Sale

Konami marks Castlevania's 40th anniversary with the original NES game free on mobile for a month, plus retro discounts on PlayStation and Steam.

Ever wanted to whip your way through Dracula's castle without spending a dime? Konami just made that a whole lot easier, because Castlevania is officially 40 years old and the celebrations are aimed squarely at your backlog.

Here's the headline deal: the original NES Castlevania is free on mobile for a full month. That's the 1986 classic that started it all, playable on your phone at zero cost. If you've never touched the game that kicked off one of gaming's most beloved series, this is about as low a barrier to entry as it gets.

But the birthday party doesn't stop at your phone. Konami is also running a big retro sale across PlayStation and Steam, with classic Castlevania titles heavily discounted. So whether you game on console or PC, there's a cheap way to stock up on vampire-hunting history.

Why does this matter? Castlevania is one of those franchises that shaped an entire genre. Its mix of gothic atmosphere, tough-as-nails platforming and that legendary soundtrack left a mark on action games that's still visible today. Forty years on, Konami is clearly happy to remind everyone where the lineage started.

For newer players, the free mobile drop is a perfect entry point, no nostalgia required. For veterans, the retro sale is a chance to fill gaps in the collection or revisit the ones that made them fall in love with the series in the first place.

Either way, the timing is hard to beat. A free game plus discounted classics means there's basically no excuse not to spend at least a little of the next month in Dracula's castle.
