Bungie Store Shutting Down: What It Means for Destiny 2 Fans

Bungie is closing its official merchandise store on October 19, with digital downloads and emblem codes available until December 31. A new storefront is planned.
Did you hear that? Just as Destiny 2 looks like it might be pulling itself out of the grave, Bungie is closing its official merch store. Yes, really.
After more than a decade of selling Destiny and Bungie gear, the current Bungie Store is being retired on October 19. The studio says it's building a new home for merchandise that's more aligned with its current goals and vision. That sounds nice and all, but it also means there's going to be a gap where you can't buy anything official for a while.
Here's the weird part: Bungie recently un-cancelled Destiny 2 after a massive fan backlash over putting the game into maintenance mode. You'd think with the game seemingly getting a second life, keeping the merch store up and running would be a no-brainer. Instead, the old storefront is going offline for months while the new one gets built. That feels counterproductive, to say the least.
And it gets stranger. The Marathon storefront, which lives on its own subdomain, is staying online during this whole transition. The two stores look basically identical, so why one is closing and the other isn't is anyone's guess. Bungie hasn't explained that one.
The most likely outcome? The Bungie Store probably gets folded into Sony's own storefront. That would mirror Bungie's absorption into Sony after the whole "independent subsidiary" thing fell apart. Some fans are hoping this leads to lower shipping costs, which would be a nice win. But there's also a real chance Sony taking over means a more limited selection of merch going forward. That's speculative, but honestly, that's the Bungie/Destiny 2 situation in a nutshell right now: something is clearly happening, but nobody can pin down exactly what.
What we do know for sure is this: the Bungie Store as we know it closes on October 19. Digital downloads and emblem codes will remain accessible until December 31. So if there's something you've been eyeing, now's the time to grab it before it's gone.
Will you be picking up any last-minute Bungie gear before the store closes? Let us know in the comments.
