Blood of Dawnwalker Timer Was Harder Before Rebalance

Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz reveals The Blood of Dawnwalker's timer was initially more restrictive, but was rebalanced before release to ease player pressure.
Did you struggle with The Blood of Dawnwalker's timer? Turns out, it could have been way worse. Game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz recently told Eurogamer that the original version was much more punishing, saying it was "harder to beat the game." But after hearing player feedback even before launch, the team decided to rebalance it, giving everyone a bit more breathing room.
The timer was a hot topic when first announced, and for good reason. You have to manage your time carefully while learning and upgrading skills, which adds a layer of pressure. Not everyone enjoys that kind of stress. Tomaszkiewicz explained that the goal wasn't to make a mini-game out of time management, but to enhance the narrative. "We wanted to give the player the proper feeling and proper emotions in the main story," he said. The Prologue, which sets up Coen's tragic backstory, stayed exactly the same, but the main game got some adjustments.
Originally, you had to think about every move even more carefully. The team was afraid people would complain that it was too restricted. So they sat down with creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz and the rest of the team to figure out what they really wanted. The answer? They didn't want the timer to overshadow the story. "This is the purpose of the main story, not to create a challenge for it," Tomaszkiewicz added. So they rebalanced it to give players a buffer, so no one would fear the clock.
Despite the initial controversy, the final version seems to have hit the sweet spot. Even though mods to remove the timer entirely popped up as soon as the game launched, most critics and players agree it doesn't feel oppressive. The game has been a hit, with one million sales and strong critical acclaim. It's available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and has already received bug fixes and performance improvements.
But wait, there's more! The first major post-launch update will bring a new, easier difficulty option for those who just want to enjoy the story without the timer pressure. And yes, Rebel Wolves is working on a New Game Plus mode, though there's no ETA yet. So if you were hoping to replay with all your skills, stay tuned.
